Conversion of Natural Gas/Fuel Oil Boiler System to Combust Waste Fiber

Newsprint Mill

Northeast US

February 1993

ESI was commissioned to design a system to convert waste fiber from the paper making process to a fuel that could be burned in two existing boilers. This system included mechanical dewatering of the fiber from the mill effluent, pneumatic conveying to the power house, thermal drying, and de-lumping of the fiber before burning in suspension burners. Several unique system concepts were applied in order to comply with very stringent emission requirements and in order to fit the components into a very limited space. As a result of this project, the client was able to minimize a quickly escalating sludge disposal cost and, at the same time, offset a substantial fossil fuel cost by generating 40,000 pph of steam from a former waste product.
