Summary: ESI was selected by FirstEnergy Generation Corporation to provide complete engineering for conversion of two existing 156 MW pulverized coal fired utility boilers to burn biomass at the company’s R.E. Burger Plant. The goal of this project was to convert two (2) identical 1955 vintage B&W pulverized coal boilers to burn biomass in suspension on one unit and a combination of suspension and grate firing on the other unit. Modifications to the plant included upgrade of the fuel receiving and dry storage systems with the flexibility to handle numerous forms of biomass including wood and ag pellets, mixed fuel cubes, green wood chips, bark, sawdust, switchgrass, and torrified briquettes. The project also included modifications to the reclaim system, bunkers, and burner fuel feed system to accommodate the new fuels. Engineering for auxiliary systems including the fuel receiving and storage systems were completed in 2010. The design work planned to upgrade the pulverizers, burners, and heat transfer surface was not completed before the entire facility was shut down and retired by FirstEnergy as part of a larger energy strategy.
